WHAT IS CRYOTHERAPY?

Mole
Skin Tag

Cryotherapy (also known as cryosurgery) is the treatment of skin lesions by liquid nitrogen. It is a fast, safe and effective almost painless procedure that involves the short exposure to liquid nitrogen, followed by slow thawing, also known as the freeze-thaw cycle.  This causes the destruction of selective cells, leaving cartilage and collagen intact, providing a framework for new tissue to adhere to. It also stimulates the immune system to destroy any remaining cells which might have survived the freezing temperature.

What lesions can be treated with Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is often used in the treatment of benign, pre-malignant and malignant lesions. However, it is not recommended for those skin changes of uncertain diagnosis.  Some examples of eligible conditions include: Skin tags, Warts, Verrucae, Keratosis, Melia, Pigmentation, Cherry Angioma/Campbell De Morgan and Pigmented Moles .

How much does a Cryotherapy treatment cost?

Prices range from £10 - £60 depending on the size of the treatment area and number of lesions. Appointments include a consultation where we will evaluate the treatment area and prices will be confirmed based on this assesment, prior to beginning treatment.

Are there any side-effects

of Cryotherapy?

A cryotherapy session is usually painless, or with slight discomfort. Initially, immediatley after the treatment has been applied, you may get any of the following symptoms, which will have been explained to you when signing our consent form:

  • Mild pain on the treatment site

  • Mild swelling and redness

  • Blistering

  • Scabbing

Cryotherapy treatments are safe and effective, producing excellent results. However, it is important that the patient follows the provided aftercare advice to acheive the best possible outcome.

Reasons why Cryotherapy might not be suitable for you

The administration of cryotherapy is generally well-tolerated and constitutes a safe procedure for most individuals. That being said, there are certain conditions which may increase the possibility of developing an undesirable complication post-treatment:

  • Scleroderma aka Cranial Arthritis/Giant Cell Arthritis

  • Raynaud's Phenomenon

  • Immuno Suppression

  • Cryoglobulnemia

  • Multiple Mylenoma

  • Pyoderma Gangrenosum

  • Antihistamines

  • Platelet deficiency disease

After-care

We will explain how to look after the area in order to promote skin healing and ensure the best possible outcome. It is usually recommended to keep the area clean from any discharge or external contaminants.  It is the patients responsibility to follow the aftercare advice and to make sure they do not pick at any blister or scab formation and to let the body heal naturally and avoid scarring.

A plaster is not usually necessary but may be appropriate if the treated area is likely to be knocked or rubbed by clothing.
